Advances in Liver Cancer Treatment in Romania: Y-90 Radioembolization Becomes Available
Romania marks a significant step forward in hepatocellular carcinoma treatment with the introduction of radioembolization using Yttrium-90 (Y-90) microspheres, an advanced interventional oncology procedure performed locally for the first time by a multidisciplinary team from the Bucharest Oncology Institute and the Fundeni Clinical Institute.
This minimally invasive method allows targeted delivery of treatment directly to the tumor, providing a therapeutic alternative for patients with advanced disease who are not eligible for surgery or have not responded to conventional therapies. The impact on healthy tissue is limited, and treatment outcomes are assessed in the first few months following the procedure.
The introduction of this therapy reflects the evolution of Romania’s medical system toward innovative solutions and highly specialized treatments. Given that approximately 300 patients could benefit from this procedure, efforts to include it in the reimbursement system are essential to expanding access.
Torus Pharma supports access to advanced medical technologies and contributes to connecting international innovation with the real needs of patients in Romania, facilitating the introduction and development of innovative therapies in complex therapeutic areas.
